Dear Family,
It is a busy time for us so I will try to be brief while I cover everything
going on.
Ash Wednesday Today. Join us for worship with communion tonight,
6:30-7:30. This is also the day to consider fasting from something (giving
something up like chocolate, TV, or meat) or fasting for something (taking
on something new like daily Bible study, serving others, journaling, reading
through the Gospels, etc.) for the period of Lent (Ash Wednesday until
Easter).
Ministry Fair/Mission Fair We had a great turnout on Sunday for the
Ministry Fair. I personally found too many areas that I want to be involved
in. After prayer, I think I am going to pursue some opportunities with
Portland Rescue Mission. I hope that each of you were also able to find
places to use your gifts and passion to serve. This Sunday we continue by
looking at mission opportunities. The Mission Fair will also be between
services. I encourage each of you to stop by not only if you are interested
in serving but also to learn about ministries that BSLC current supports so
that you can pray better for them. We have a strong history in missions
that will only grow in the future.
Celebration Sunday Sunday February 20th will mark the 40th Day in our
journey it is also almost 50 years to the day from the day that BSLC was
established. On that very special day we will have one joint service
beginning at 9:30. Please mark your calendars. This change will challenge
us a little but as the elders decided on it we felt it was worth a little
inconvenience in order to be one body as we move on from the 40 Days and
Celebrate our 50th Anniversary.
A look at some inconveniences:
* Seating will be tight. Plan to sit close and arrive early.
* The service will be longer (about 90-100 minutes).
* There are no Bible classes or children's classes.
* Parking will be challenging. Carpool. Find some friends in your
new small group and car pool from home or at least park down the hill by
Krispy Kreme and carpool the ride up to BSLC.
A look at some of the benefits:
* Worship as one body.
* A sermon delivered by Pastor Roluffs (beloved pastor of BSLC for
over 34 years)
* Opportunities to live out each of the five purposes we learned in
the 40 Days.
* Celebration of what God h done in the past 50 years and in the
course of the 40 Days.
* A sense of unity as we look toward a purpose filled next 50 years.
I don't think you want to miss this one.
As I was reading through Hebrews 5, I was struck by one of the implications
of Jesus' humanity. Because Jesus lived a human life He is (v2) able to
deal gently with those who are ignorant or going astray. What a great
promise. Not just forgiveness, but gentle forgiveness. Maybe that truth
can help us run to Him when we fail rather than running away from Him.
